Sarah Losing Faith in God's Promise
The story of Sarah to me takes an interesting turn. God has talked to Abram and reiterated his covenant that his offspring will be spread among the nations. They would be numbered so great like the stars in the heaven. We learn in the scriptures that Sarah is barren. So we know she was unable to have children. Afraid that Abraham would never be able to fulfill God's promises through her. The felt that the possibility through her was impossibleimpossible. She then decided to give Hagar ( her handmaid) to Abram to marry and bare children.
My title might seem out of the ordinary to Sarah,but the lesson I learn here from her was valuable to me. The first thing is a lot of us are taught as children in our parents home about covenants. We are also taught about God's promises and when we have faith in him he holds up to his end of the bargain he made. One of my seminary teachers taught me when we decide to turn from God some of the blessings we could've expected pass is by. Those blessings that could've been ours if we only believed "
Why do we turn from what we know? It's because we have the agency to have faith in what God tells us that seems impossible can be made possible. In return we decide to take things in our own hands. Why do we take things in our own hands to try and get those blessings sooner than waiting and believing God's promises to us? Many of us in the church have priesthood blessings and are told things that would help us get through decisions or circumstances.
I see Sarah in this part of her story wanting to help her husband be able to fulfill God's promises. Then the way she sees is best is by giving her handmaid. God all ready knew she was married to him and he knew her circumstance of being barren. He heard her husband's prayers of the want of children and made promises to him that his seed would be great like the stars in the sky. We are her willingness to give up and her choice of making that decision to help the promises take affect if not by her then another.
When Hagar does become pregnant we also see the rage that comes because she held her self higher than the master that have her to her husband. Smiting Hagar in the process of her hurt of not being able to bare a child.
a lot of what Sarah went through at this time reminds me just how much we want prayers answered or a promise. We then decide to take things in our own hands to make it happen. In return because we forget to rely on the Lord it goes badly. Making the problem in our life a slap in the face. Our feelings of helplessness take over. We then run and dog our hole deeper in the way we try to take our situation in our own hands. What seems to be impossible can be made possible when we trust and have faith in the promises God makes us.
When we lose that faith and then decide and give in to God's word to except the promises. How many times in our life do we finally say okay God I'm willing to except my date and give in to God's promises? Do you ever see the things fulfilled or life change to a place of peace or fullfillment? God's plans aren't always our own plans. It's the way we decide to go through and the way we react.
