Know Who You Really Are: Finding Strength in Your Divine Identity

The world is constantly trying to label us. We are labeled by our mistakes, our weaknesses, our jobs, our social status, or even our political views. When these labels become our identity, they limit our potential and invite discouragement into our homes.

In his powerful October 2025 address, "Know Who You Really Are," Elder Brik V. Eyre gave us a liberating truth: Our true identity is found only by seeking validation vertically. He taught that the foundation of all self-worth and purpose is rooted in the knowledge that we are beloved children of God. This divine identity is the most important truth we can teach our families.

1. The Adversary's Tactic: Horizontal Validation

Elder Eyre pointed out that the adversary attempts to distract us from our divine heritage. He uses a tactic of horizontal validation—encouraging us to seek our worth from people, comparisons, social media, or worldly measures. When we seek validation horizontally, we are vulnerable to:

  • Discouragement: When our performance or popularity falters, our self-worth crumbles.
  • Limitation: We accept labels based on weaknesses ("I am a bad parent," "I am an anxious person") rather than rising above them.

The solution, as taught by Elder Eyre, is simple but profound: We must seek validation vertically to heaven.

2. The Power of "Thou Art My Son"

To illustrate the power of this vertical perspective, Elder Eyre referred to the prophet Moses. When Moses met God face-to-face, God repeatedly taught him his true, divine heritage, saying, "Thou art my son." Immediately following this experience, the adversary appeared and addressed him as "Moses, son of man"—a title that sought to diminish his divine connection.

Moses's ability to resist the adversary came from the sure knowledge of who he really was—a son of God.

This story teaches us that what matters most is the title God has given us, not the title the world or the adversary attempts to impose. This truth gives us the spiritual strength to overcome challenges and boldly proclaim, "I am a child of God."

3. Anchoring the Family in Divine Identity

As parents and family members, our greatest work is to help those we love—and ourselves—stand strong in the knowledge of their divine birthright.

When a child makes a mistake, the conversation should not center on the label of "bad child," but on the opportunity for growth given their divine potential. When a spouse feels overwhelmed, the comfort should be rooted in their eternal worth, not their temporary failures.

This knowledge of our divine identity is the eternal foundation that gives us resilience, purpose, and the courage to endure to the end.
