The Atoning Love of Jesus Christ: Forgiveness and Healing

A Blog Post on Elder Neil L. Andersen's Assurance

Elder Neil L. Andersen's powerful message, "The Atoning Love of Jesus Christ," is a compassionate testimony that the Savior's Atonement provides complete forgiveness for those who repent and profound healing for those wounded by the sins of others. This is a message of absolute assurance: the power of Christ's love is sufficient for all human pain.

1. Forgiveness: The Awaiting Miracle

Elder Andersen's counsel to those seeking forgiveness for serious sins is direct and hopeful: "please know this miracle is awaiting you."

  • The Savior's Continuous Call: The path to forgiveness begins with strengthening your faith in Jesus Christ, which invigorates the soul's yearning to "Come unto me."
  • More Than Repentance: While acknowledging serious sins to priesthood leaders is a necessary, humble part of submitting our will, Elder Andersen emphasizes that full forgiveness is a divine gift that comes through the grace of Jesus Christ Himself.
  • The Broken Heart: True repentance is accompanied by a broken heart and a contrite spirit. This godly sorrow means humbly putting your will in God's hands and having a deep longing to return to Him, whatever the cost. Full forgiveness may take time, requiring patience as we wait upon the Lord’s full approval, but the miracle is certain for those who yield their hearts.

2. Healing: Comfort for the Wounded

The talk equally offers comfort to those who have been deeply injured by the serious sins of others—the "heartbreak, the loss, the suffocating feeling of betrayal."

  • Christ Knows and Loves You: Elder Andersen gives the "absolute assurance" that the Savior knows you and loves you perfectly. He can be present in those moments of grief because of His Atonement.
  • The Power to Comfort: The Savior is your "comfort and strength." As a result of His supreme suffering, He knows how to succor (give relief and aid) you according to your infirmities.
  • Reaching Out: This healing power is available to all who seek Him and ask for His help. Reach out to Him, and "He will send His angels to bear you up." The Atonement is a powerful tool of comfort and companionship in all types of suffering.

The message is clear: whether you are seeking release from the burden of your own sin or healing from the wounds inflicted by another, the solution is found in its fullness in the atoning love of Jesus Christ.

Study Guide: The Atoning Love of Jesus Christ

This guide will help you personally apply the twin blessings of forgiveness and healing offered through the Savior's Atoning Love.

Section 1: Strengthening Faith for Forgiveness

The path to receiving the divine gift of forgiveness requires an increase of faith and humble action.

  1. Yielding the Heart:
    • Elder Andersen's Counsel: Full forgiveness comes as we "yield your heart to Him," turning from sin and toward God.
    • Question: What is one specific, persistent weakness (sin or habit) I need to fully turn from right now? What action demonstrates my willingness to "yield my heart" completely to Christ's power this week?
  2. The Contrite Spirit:
    • Principle: A broken heart and a contrite spirit are prerequisites for receiving the Atonement's forgiveness.
    • Reflection: How do I feel godly sorrow (a deep longing to return to God) versus simply sorrow for being caught or for facing consequences? What honest conversation (with Heavenly Father, self, or leader) do I need to have to truly seek a contrite spirit?

Section 2: Reaching Out for Healing

For those carrying the burden of pain caused by others' sins, the Savior offers comfort and strength.

  1. Seeking the Savior's Comfort:
    • Elder Andersen's Assurance: "The Savior knows you and loves you... Reach out to Him. He is your comfort and strength."
    • Action: When I feel overwhelmed by grief, betrayal, or anguish, do I actively and immediately turn to Christ? What specific word, image, or scripture will I use this week to remind myself to "reach out to Him" when a wave of pain hits?
  2. The Succoring Power:
    • Principle: Christ knows how to succor (aid and relieve) us because He suffered the fullness of all mortal challenges.
    • Question: What specific feeling (e.g., loneliness, anger, fear) am I carrying that I need to consciously and specifically place at the Savior's feet, trusting that He understands it perfectly?

Section 3: Commitment to the Atoning Love

  1. Faith as a Gift:
    • Principle: Strengthening your faith in Christ is the beautiful beginning that unlocks all other blessings.
    • Pledge: This week, I will strengthen my faith by setting aside \rule{4cm}{0.15mm} minutes daily to ponder, pray, and think deeply about a favorite scripture that teaches me about the Atonement.
