The Announcement to Mary
I feel that the biggest part of Mary's story is the anounciation that she was carrying the Christ child. When the angel Gabriel came to her he announced unto her that she was called to serve and it was time for her to take her place is what my thoughts are on the announcement. As Luke 1:28-31(king James version) and the angel came to her and said, hail, thou art highly favoured, the lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said into her, fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with god. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. Luke 1: 34- 38(king James version) Then Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, the holy ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold thy cousin elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with god nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, behold the handmaid of the lord; be it into me according to the word. And the angel departed from her.
The things I pull out of her story at this point is she is being told: she is highly favoured by the lord, she is blessed among women, she is troubled, she asked in her mind what kind of a salutation is this(puzzlement), the angel knew she had fear, she is being called to serve and to take her place in becoming the mother to the one that is sent to be our savior. She inquires how it could be possible, he lets her know nothing is impossible, and she accepts her calling to be chosen to bring forth such a blessing.
I wonder what kind of questions could have gone through Mary's head at the time she saw the angel. Then to here that she was chosen to carry gods child especially in a society were she could be stoned to death. my thoughts would be why was i chosen for such a task at hand? God must have known her strengths and knew the type of character she was. He knew she could raise him up unto him his own father to do the will that was needed for the world. I can see trembling come over myself in this situation wondering what my espoused would do. Would he put me away, send me to the wolves of society, or even would i be left alone to raise this child?
I was thinking one day on the words that christ said when talking to the the people how he came for the sinner. thinking about his birth and the announcement that was made to Mary and being unwed but espoused o Joseph. The thought crossed my mind of how society looks down on those who are unconforming to the norm of what society is now. How interesting he came for the sinners and yet from a perspective if people did not believe during her time she was a virgin they could have looked at his mother as sinner as will. willing to be the handmaid of the lord no matter what societies punishment came at her. She took her calling for her mission in life to bring into the world her son Jesus and also took upon her head the willingness and trust in the Lord that whatever society thought about her or did to her he would be by her side to get her through the trails she now would face. She was brave to stand up to do what she was being asked from god. moving forward in faith. relying on the words of an angel who came and visited her. She now knew that whatever trial she would face raising her son when seeming that it was impossible could be made possible to get through because god let her know things would be okay. She became the handmaid f the lord by accepting her call.
how many times in life do you think god has beckoned us to take on our mission call of serving him? Do you accept that call or do you leave it in fear because of what another society or others might think? We can take our mission call and accept it and become a handmaiden like Mary in our life by being willing to serve.no mater how small the task may seem or how big it is we are on a mission from god in this life to help bring each other back. But how do we be a handmaiden like Mary? How cam you trust in god when being called if we question what is being asked of us to do? we can simply listen to the words of the angel "with God nothing is impossible."
Mary is a great example of her willingness of taking on her mission call and becoming a handmaid of the Lord. Even if society would shun her she had the faith and trust that he would watch over her so she could bring about the great work that he needed her to do. She exemplifies her testimony and strength to take upon her such a powerful calling in her life. Reading about her here in this part of her story makes me wonder how in my life can i be an example and except my mission daily that god is calling me to? How do you think you can you fulfill that as will and trust god in doing so? Can you stand up and say society might shun me but i am willing to take his step to do your work God and trust and haave faith he can get you through what he needs you to do?
