Mary's Song
Luke1: 46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
When Mary meets her cousin Elizabeth and is told the prophecy from her cousins mouth of how people will call her blessed; Mary's gives a song of praise. A lot of people compare her song to the song of Hannah. It is also called the "Magnificant" around the world in some religions. Her way of response to her cousin words and her way of glorifying God to be the mother of his son. As I was just reading her praise I started thinking of the ways we can follow her example in seeing the work that God asks us to do and seeing the things he has done for us.
Verse 46 touches on her response that her spirit magnify the Lord. How do you think her spirit magnify the lord? I think of the way she was told by the angel that she would the mother of the lord and how she accepted the calling. The things I think about personally is how can we accept when we are called to do the Lord's work? Would you be willing to be a handmaid and trust him that everything would be all right like Mary did?
In verse 47 Mary talks about how her spirit rejoices in the lord. What do you think that means for us personally how we can show we rejoice in the lord? Mary's example that her spirit rejoices of the excitement but also her humbleness that she gives about following and showing the kindness to another. She left to go check on her cousin and was there helping her as will as her cousin helped her out in a society where mar y could've been put away for the pregnancy. with her example of reaching out to another in there time of pregnancy and helping around the house to do the things needed to prepare for the way of a child to come. She knew her circumstance but she was still willing to be there in any way that she could! Makes me wonder how can I help another the best that I can? Usually just helping another can be just being there, sometimes that is all that we need to do is be there! How many people just want a shoulder to cry on someone just to open the door and see you for who you trully are and let that door remain open with an open invitation? What can you do for another that might just touch there life in the easiest way? I just wonder how much Mary gave? We see so little of the story except we know she ran to her cousins when she heard the news from the angel and stayed with her for a few months.
In verse 48 how Mary talks about being in a low estate of a handmaidens but yet the work is so important that the world will rejoice. She must have felt that she was small to th work that God could provide. Yet God seen her and called her to an important work to raise and be the mother of his son. How she must be felt being insignificant to such a great work at hand. She was given the job to raise God's son. Yet she had strength to get through what society would say about her. I wonder if her thoughts crossed her mind as a child who is scared that goes through their own sin feels. I put myself in her situation and think even though I had my oldest out of wedlock the questions that crossed my mind being around those who lived the word and here I was scared to be around those I always stood strong in the church with wondering what would be said. And I think about how humbling she takes on her mission call and trusts in his that everything would be okay. That she trusted enough in the words that prophets spoke about that the Lord would be born of a virgin to be brought into this world and mingle among all mankind.
In verse 50-55 Mary recognizes God's work and help that he gives to all that follow him. She recognizes how he shows mercy to those who seek him out. Showing his strength to those that don't listen by spreading them apart from those who do. Making those who need to be humbled by bringing them to their knees to remember him. For those that hunger who put their faith I him he helps them so they don't hunger and find some food to help take away that moment of pain. She also mentions how he has helped Israel to remember his mercy that he has showed on them. Reminding us all that he has spoken to Israel but also those who listen to guide us as a prophet and even our own personal revelation. How can we recognize the good that God does in our own life? Have you ever thought about making a list and writing down the things that you see? When we recognize the good and the beaconing in our life that God has done we begin to recognize his hand in our growth through life. We can then build on our testimony and bear witness the way Mary does with her song. She heard to us her testimony of the woris that God has done for her in her life and recognizes his goodness that he has done for all. How can we follow her example?
