Dinah
My thoughts on the whole story of Dinah comes from personal experience with sin and love. I understand today why God says wait until your married to have children to do the things that a married couple should do. You develop attachments and even though people say love can't develop i believe differently. It does make you feel according of values believed different.
In Dinah's story we see that she goes wandering into the city. We are not told all the details of the story. We are only told that Schechem defiled her. What does that mean to be defiled? According to the dictionary it is a verb which means to desecrate, or violate the charity of a woman. With that being said her chasity was taken from her. I know I read a lot of stories were people believe it was rape and she was kidnapped. I see her story in a different point of view. A lot dealing with my past and where it took me.
When I look at Dinah going into town to see the women of the area. I see the seriousness of another lifestyle wondering what it would be like.. Like many of us wonder what would it be to live like others in the world? She was taught and raised the values of god but her curiosity and will of fight against satan got the best of her. Meeting Schechem along the way who looked upon her and took her away to his palace then somewhere defiled her. We don't know if She was having possible meeting beforehand or much information how much they knew of each other the bible doesn't go into that. Just that he played with her after taking her and defiled her. We do know that sex as today is a perversion out of marriage and that the uncircumcised was unclean to the hebrews.
We know that scechem's soul clave to Dinah, that he loved her, and spoke kindly into her. Which to me shows they were living in a relationship that made her look like a harlot to her brothers, but she was developing feelings towards him to listen to his mind words. She was living in a relationship chosen like some of us who have been there have done. Yet she must have made an impression on Schechem for him to have his father ask her father and brothers for her hand in marriage. He was learning and trying to rectify the wrong that he had brought to her from being defiled. He fell in love with her and because of the way she probably showed desire through the things she was taught he was learning from her about god. The feelings she might have suggested about returning to her family scared to be chastised. Knowing all that Dinah must have desired made his desires just as strong to rectify the wrong that he had caused that his desire became more to make her his wife. Seeking out her hand in marriage through his father. Asking Jacob in prayer for his daughters hand in marriage to be his son's wife. I
So when Hamor Schechem's father was told that the men of the city needed to be circumcised he agreed because to them being uncircumcised was unclean. He agreed to the task at hand and all the men were circumcised. Like we ask and go to the lord to help us heal our hearts Hamor was asking to heal their's. He was trying to make things right and was asking for a way to go about it. Agreeing to the men in the city, Hamor, and schechem all went about and all of them got circumcised. I look at their act of wanting to be a righteous under God's commandments so we do all that we can by being babtized and doing the ordinances needed to move on to what God wants us to do. Then the hold back comes when others decide the change in our life isn't enough and take matters in their own hands. The same way that Simeon and Levi did by killing all the villages men, and taking the women and children as servants. I see the symbolism see here is us as human beings say okay I forgive you, but in reality I dont. I will torture you because of the wrong you have done no matter how hard you try and justify your actions and make things right. How many times or ever had that done to you by trying to make things right but it feels as if some evil wants you held back? Getting tortured for our past mistakes or torturing another?
After all was done even Jacob was upset with his son's asking them what they had done? They try to justify their actions by saying they didn't want their sister treated like a harlot. In a mother symbolism that we are asked to forgive but if we don't be will have disappointment with us like Jacob did with his sons. The sons felt they judged correctly to protect their sister.
To me the whole lesson and story of Dinah shows many different things to learn. One is that the heart can list for the things of the world and gain a love for that sin. We can look for ramifications to make things right with the lord and others we might have wronged. That even when we do all that we can people still hold us to our past and try to make and justify their actions and held accountable for our misdeeds. When asked why we still judged and didn't forgive when they did all to rectify. We try to justify our actions to make it feel like we are in the right. When in all we at still hurting them and those around.
