Mary and Joseph Search for Jesus
we have in Luke 2:41-51 the story of Mary and Joseph going to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. In the year that Jesus was 12 years old they went for the custom of the Passover feast. As the feast had been fulfilled and as they were returning Joseph and his mother knew that Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem. They assumed he was in the company as they traveled back and while they journeyed almost a days out of traveling they realized he wasn't there after they looked among their kinfolk and acquintances. They then headed back to Jerusalem seeking him out. Three days later they find him in the temple among the doctors both hearing them,and asking them questions. Everyone that heard him were astonished with his understanding and answers. When they saw him in the temple they were amazed. His mother(Mary) said to him" Son, why hast thou this dealt with us? Behold, they father and I have sought there sorrowing. Jesus them answers " How is it that he sought me? What he not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not which he spake. Mary kept the words he said close to her heart.
I find this story of Mary and Joseph losing their son and then go looking for him. They ask family members people they knew if he was with them. Then they resulted in a path to go back to Jerusalem and search for a duration of three days. To find him safe in the temple answering the questions of the people and to be surrounded by him. How many of us in life feel like we have lost someone we loved missing or hurting etc? How do you look to help them or even go looking for them or even help them to discover themself? Many thoughts cross my mind on this story. How Christ being a 12 year old boy had his mom worrying about him to search him out in the crowds never giving up that she would find him in the crowds along with her husband. Then I think how Mary taught him in her home to know the scriptures to know that he is the son of god. She gave him the sense of knowledge to be able to teach him in the home that he knew when asked about what he was doing that he could respond " that he was about his father's business! " Even the scriptures say that he waxed strong as he grew more in the spirit. Making his knowledge of this world piercing the veil to be able to see what his father's will was for him.
I think of how God would have chosen such a strong spiritual being who had to be in the counsel as a chosen spirit. He would be chosen someone that could teach and remember him always to be able to raise in the home what his son needed to remember to help him bring about all the generations of the earth salvation. Because of her and the spirit he knew that the temple was his father's house and that the questions he was asking and answering were the things needed to be done. Thanks to his earthly mother for keeping him close to his father in heaven teachings.
I also think about how the proclamation of the family applied just as much then as it does today in "in parents having responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children." . ..... " parents have a sacred duty to read their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of god, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. " How all his parents throughout Christ's life taught him God this father through the spirit and Joseph and Mary through the earthly mortal needs that were needed in a family setting.
One of the other things that I find interesting is that his parents went looking for him. They searched all over the place like parents who loose their children. Day in day out they searched.
I think about how many of loose the path we were in to find and search for Christ in our own lives. We might have been taught of him and walk away and somewhere along the path we look to see if he is there so we run along the way looking in every direction to find him and bring him back in to our life. We search scripture we open the door to him briefly only to return on that forsaken path and keep looking. Yet when we trully find him we see that he is doing his father's will by still carrying us through our trials.
Being still a constant companion urging us asking us to listen to what we need in our life we realize the angels he sent in our life to be a representative and do his work. How many of us search day and night for who we trully are in our life? We search day and night for answers from God when everything is in plain sight that adding God's plan and striving to be like his only begotten son we remember who we are but also know the truth of God's plan.
even though many times in life we feel that we are left behind that we start to pray? I remember a time when my little sister and I were left behind at a camping trip. And all I could do is pray and try to calm my little sister to let her know everything would be ok. My siblings yelling at my parents you left our sisters you need to turn around and go get them. Makes me wonder if their were others in the caravan that they were in saying where is your child you left him!. Then the realization hits that on my goodness I need to go grab my child. What did I do? The guilt sits in and the fear of not seeing them again. Searching all over because you don't want to loose your child. Just like the story of the lost sheep. The shepherd looks until every sheep is accountable. Mary and Joseph searched for jesus ;making sure he was accountable for to travel back home. They even made sure he was safe. Even though he was about his father's work in the temple, in the family they still taught him the values and virtue needed to pursue his father's work and held him accountable and even made themselves accountable for his safety as his earthly parents. Even the words he spoke Mary held them close to her heart as a mother would knowing that her son knew who he was.
One of the other things I think about is how people who are converted to Christ leave their families because of disagreements to the teachings. They go about doing the Lord's work in believing in christ. The way that Christ did in the temple for his father. How their families them search to either accept the truths daily bringing them even closer to god.
