The Samaritan Woman
The Well-Watered Woman
The story of the Samaritan Woman the past few weeks has started to get more personal to me and my own life. The more I learn of her the more I see others opinions, the more I see my self. I wonder how at times we all night feel like this woman that Jesus showed kindness. How willing and loving was his teachings to her? Makes me wonder how can I be more open and receptive to his teachings? Is my heart ready and in the right place to hear the message he has for me like the Samaritan Woman was when she meet the savior at the well? We find her story in John 4:6-42 when Jesus told his disciples that they would go through Samaria.
The disciples leave Jesus to go to the city to get meat to eat. As he was waiting a woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus asked her to give him some drink. The woman in return asked how he being a Jew ask of her a Samaritan and a woman for drink? I'm return telling him How the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritan. Her we see that she points out how being a woman and a Samaritan have played an affect in their society. The way we look at other people that are different than us. In our own stubbornness is there someone in your life you would be afraid of asking for even a drink of water from? Is it a countercultural reason or just because of some discrimination towards another, maybe even a big fight that caused a drift in relationship family or friend. Whatever the reason we probably have an excuse why we wouldn't ask in our own stubbornness. Here we see Jesus showing us an example of looking past another person from the heritage born with to the spiritual heritage that we all belong to. He said to the woman " Jesus answered and said unto her, if thou knewest the gift of god and who it is that asked thee, give me to drink; thou would eat have asked of him, and he would have given the living water. How many times in life do we miss a message from god? Would we realize who we are standing in front of it we were in his presence? How many hear the teachings but don't choose to not live them. Being a part of your roots and grown up with in teachings of christ but yet you felt they served no purpose in your life? Deep down you held on to those values? As he said if we know who he is we will ask for the living water that he can give us. The moment we are down do you ever get down on your knees and express the way you feel and ask to take the gift he gives us in comfort to take upon yourself of the living water he can give us. Many times I wonder what posses us as human beings to forget that gift causing us not to seek him out. That if he was standing in front of us we wouldn't recognize who he is.
The next thing we read is the Samaritan Woman asking Christ, " Sir, thou has nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence thou hast thou that living water? " Putting this to life do you or know someone in life that feels they are at a bottom of a well. That they can not draw upon anything to help them get through life stresses. They even feel that Christ can not get them out of that deep well and wonder how he can pull them up to this living water. They seek to know how even Christ can help them even perform a miracle of life to live from. As the saying goes we can hit a spiritual rock bottom. Feeling as though we have no way of climbing out of our deep well.
Christ then explains to the Samaritan women that whosoever drinks spiritually of the water that he has to offer will never thirst again eventually springing up to a spring overflowing leading to everlasting life. We get to learn here how the interdwelling of feeling the holy spirit divine life source. How if we come to the understanding of the things he teaches we can find forgiveness to the sins we feel are being carried, how when we need comfort he carries us through those times of need, how we can find that the savior has an unconditional love for each of us. It's just being able to come to some sort of grasp on the the teachings he gives us and that same desire to continue to grow in those teachings until we are a springing well sprouted up feeling that we have eternal life in him. It's a process that we all go through to gain that testimony in him and to be able to leave behind those feelings of doubt it whatever it might be that Christ all ready accepts us for who we are and what ever we have done. We then see the Samaritan Woman leave her jug of water behind after Christ tells her of having give husbands and the man she was with won't give her his name. That symbolizing she caught a grasp of the word of christ and was able to leave behind her troubles. How many of us can trust the Lord enough that we can leave our troubles behind and then be able to share that we have found living Christ's teachings and making him a part of our life that we can share and ask others isn't this man a prophet the messiah we here that has come to save us all? Can you do that? People in the village knew who the woman was what she went through. Who knows maybe she was the talk of the town whatever it may be they knew who she was and they relied on her word to come and seek Christ out themself. Believing in her testimony that she shared with them. They even told the Samaritan Woman they believed, not because of her saying but because they themself witnessed and they gained a knowledge that he was the Christ the savior of the world.
Before the Samaritan Woman takes off to the village she asks him that their fathers worshipped in the mountain and that others say worship in Jerusalem. It was as though she was asking him where is the right place for us to worship daily. Jesus answer was that his hour cometh, that true worshipper worship the father in spirit and truth. Giving the reason is God is spirit so we need to do so in spirit and truth. (John 4:23-24)
when his disciples approached they were even amazed that Christ was talking to a Samaritan woman. Christ even testified to her " I am the messiah" Jesus teaches us how not to pay attention to the social metal that our societies place in each other. How to invite others in through a hospitality of kindness the way he brought this woman from Samaria into his circle. Through that kindness and willingness to talk He was able to leave with the woman a testimony and knowledge. Because of who she was and people knowing her she was able to transform a whole village in Christ and for the village to gain a testimony themself in him. She received an invitation from Christ to get to know the gift of god who happened to be in front of her the son of god. Which is also an invitation to all of us to get to know him. She received the offer she sought more information out from Christ she wanted What he offered, and grew on her testimony that she was willing to share with others. Steps that we can follow even in our own life. By one woman who felt as though this person because of social status shouldn't be talking to me and a willing heart to listen and ask questions a whole village was able to be transformed and gain a testimony in christ. How are actions can influence so many. Where will your testimony take you on sharing his work with you? How many people do you think it will impact?
