Mary's at the Wedding of Canaan
John 2: 1-11; And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Here we have a celebration that Mary and her son Jesus happened to be at of some friends. In that time celebrations of weddings went for days until the wine ran out. Usually the best wine was even served at the beginning of the wedding. We also read from these scriptures that this is the first miracle recorded that Jesus performed. Looking from the situation from Mary's eyes makes me wonder what Mary saw in her heart about her own son.
Mary had to know what Jesus' full potential as a mother to ask him and direct the servants to do as they were told by her son. Just like Mary is mothers see beyond a child the stillness of their learning. We always pray that they can see there own potential. We even encourage them to accomplish set task to help them develop those talents that we see them possess. Mary must have felt an extreme joy in seeing her son come more and more the person that she knew he was and fulfilling the prophecies that have said from prophets before. It seems that there is no greater joy as a mother than knowing one of her children accomplish a task of becoming more and more the person they are many to be and able to see them become that person.
We also see in this story that Mary went to her son with the problem that the wine was running low. Jesus in return asks his mother what he should do? Her reply happen to be to the servants "to do whatever he tells you to do." She sought her own son ought with a problem being shown at the wedding. Just like we do daily or when we have a problem that we want God's help in resolving. His own mother looked for help so shame wouldn't come upon their friends that were hosting the wedding. In return like he asked his mother what would you like for me to do? We let the Lord know in our prayers what we would like to see happen. In the end we rely on Christ to be our solution to the problem in helping us resolve the situation so we are not ashamed. Making our wine of life's problem the sweetest answer to our prayers when as his servant follow his directions to the answer we are looking for.
I think of this miracle as such to the sacrament prayer that is said on Sunday when we take the water. Mary was asking her son to perform a blessing in the couple to sanctify the marriage. Here we see such a miracle happen and the master was blessed with the sweetest wine that he has tasted. As we take the last part of the the sacrament we are taking on his his most sweetest part of his blessing for us in bless and sanctify our own very souls. The people of the wedding got to witness a miracle performed and the company of the party will remember what he did in a daily basis to be able to share with others and be a witness of the goodness that he is able to offer to those who seek him out and follow what he desires them to do. He asks us to be a witness to the miracles he provides for us and how he has been a solution to a problem. Sometimes just listening to another's problem and able to relate how the Lord eventually turned it to a miracle might be a solution to another's answer. He directs us to finding the answer when we go to him.
Just like the sacrament every week is a transforming act in reminding us of the covenants we have taken at baptism it is also a way I help our hearts transform. That transformation of our hearts to learn to become more like Christ. The water to wine and it being the sweetest the master of the wedding ever tasted. Show is how we can be one of his best servants to share the spiritual truths that we witness. By coming to Christ we can find such sweetness to you that he brings. This wine was served last and was the sweetest also reminds me of all our efforts when we feel that there is a last hope in our life Christ always shares with us the best that we can offer when we do as directed and make our joy sweet.
How does Mary's example of asking her son being light on the things we see in our own children or child in our life? Do we celebrate the things they accomplish? As Mary did do we seek Christ out when we see a problem for another person or ourself to not being shame among all involved? Do we find a solution when we do the things we feel are directed by Christ to do when we pray? How can the sacrament bring the blessings we seek from Christ about and sanctify our lives as we stand as a witness to his miracles and words? Christ came to earth and performed miracles so we could have an example of how we should live our lives, and I wonder how can we find that sweet joy in following and trying to live the examples he showed to us?
