Mary Faces being Put Away by Joseph
Mathew 1:18-25 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privilay But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.
How would it be to live in a time that when you are found being pregnant you would be put away? We find Joseph found Mary with child instead of making her a public example he was looking at other options that would not kill her, or bring harm to her. How many of us today could do the same if we felt someone disgraced us that we would rather find an alternative to society 's punishment. Society no matter the time frame seems to looked down at women in general that faulted away from God's commandment of staying chaste. The name types that follow are flat out a teardown instead of bringing a person back to christ and realizing their worth in god. I find it interesting that God uses Mary in this manner of bringing forth his son into the world. The lessons that we get to learn are deep. She is espoused to Joseph and it shows how Joseph was upset with her and still loves her despite not knowing everything going on yet from the angel. He doesn't want to put her away as the law commands but feels he needs to do something because here she (Mary) is pregnant. Assuming the worst from her and probably not wanting to be the talk of the town I can only imagine the thoughts that could have crossed his mind. The torment he was going through. It wasn't just his torment but also Mary knowing God's will and that the impossible just happened praying for her espoused that he won't have her killed but also the faith to be the vessel to carry the child the world for generations would know. That putting all surrender into God's hands that you would be able to fulfill all that he has asked of you to do. Do you think the fright night have been all so overwhelming?
The next thing that comes to mind with Mary facing being a single mom and loosing her espoused husband is how God gives mercy and grace to her favour. He sends an angel to explain to Joseph letting him know that Mary wasn't unfaithful to him. That the child she is carrying is God's child and that he would be the one to help raise him. It was okay to take Mary as his wife and that all would be okay. The road would be hard but the price they would pay would be worth it in the end to bring about all salvation. He was sent for the world for our sins. How would it be to be in Joseph's shows facing an angel and now knowing this child is there for all that sin. What a great responsibility. Even to the time he was born he took to wife Mary but did not know her until after the child was born. He did as was commanded. And I can only imagine the relief she felt as she trusted God in going about his work. God knew Joseph's heart that he was a just man that when he sent the angel on Mary's behalf and that he would listen to all that he had to save. He knew once Joseph knew the other side of the story instead of all that his mind or fellow peers were saying about Mary that she would be safe and that his child would be brought into the world with a father that would take him in as his own and raise him alongside Mary. All that can be done and the example that God gives us here is that a man can step in and raise a child uprightly to know him even his own child to know all that scriptures even teach. Even the carpenters son as he was known learned about his father from his earthly step father. Mary entrusted God that his will would follow and that Joseph's heart would be softened towards her child that wasn't his and be accepted that she might raise him in a two person family righteously towards god. How can we trust and bring those who might be in a situation as this know if they seek God and are facing single motherhood because of their choices that they still have worth? How can we instill in them that as they seek God that they might find a man that can bring their child uprightly towards him like Joseph did for Mary? God teaches us through things that I wish I could've read this and realized after I was pregnant with my son to trust him at that time I had him out of marriage. Because even though I have made mistakes I am looking now towards god I think as I was writing this I found an answer to my prayers. God sees us and has a plan. Right now for my situation I don't want to explain what I felt but I pray who needs this realized and gets their answer that God will bring about righteousness when we seek it out even if it is for children we can still bring them to god through teaching them what is right by our examples of striving to live for god.There is such a significance to this story from How God uses Mary and Joseph to teach us a valuable lesson in step parenting in God's way and will and following his plan.
