We often look at The Family: A Proclamation to the World and think, "Yes, that's the ideal! That's the perfect blueprint." It outlines the divine structure: gender is essential, marriage is between a man and a woman, and parents have a sacred duty to rear children in love and righteousness.

But let’s be honest: living that blueprint in a messy world is hard. The world is loud, temptation is constant, and the internal struggle with selfishness is real.

This is where Elder B. Corey Cuvelier’s talk, “The Name by Which Ye Are Called,” becomes the essential operating manual. Elder Cuvelier taught us that our identity as covenant disciples of Christ is the power source that fuels the entire Proclamation. Without that power, the blueprint just sits on the shelf, beautiful but untouched.

1. Covenants Cure the Proclamation’s Greatest Threat

The Proclamation’s promise of happiness is conditional: it's "most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ."

Elder Cuvelier identified the enemy of those teachings: “selfishness and individualism.” Selfishness undermines unity, destroys respect, and poisons love—all the qualities necessary for the Proclamation's success.

The remedy? Covenant discipleship. When we sincerely take Christ's name upon us, we promise to "always remember Him" and "keep His commandments." This act of selfless commitment is the divine remedy for individualism. If we are focused on Christ, we stop focusing solely on ourselves. It’s the spiritual energy needed to turn the Proclamation’s counsel into daily reality.

2. Discipleship is the Sermon Seen at Home

The Proclamation calls parents to fulfill sacred, complementary roles. Elder Cuvelier gave us the most effective way to teach those roles: by example.

He taught that the greatest sermons are "the quiet, unassuming actions and deeds observed in the lives of ordinary people who, trying to be like Jesus, go about doing good."

  • When you respond to a spouse with forgiveness (a Proclamation virtue) instead of anger, you are bearing a quiet witness (Cuvelier).

    • Action: I will make my family prayer or scripture study this week not just a routine, but a deliberate public statement (witness) of my family's reliance on God. How can I increase the sincerity of our prayers?

The two messages combined remind us that we have both the divine instruction and the divine power to succeed.

My Synthesis Pledge: I know that the Family Proclamation is the inspired blueprint for my family. I pledge to access the power to live it by prioritizing my covenant identity—to always remember Jesus Christ—so that my life becomes a clear witness of His teachings.
